'Drug addict' Kanwariya arrested for vandalizing car in Delhi

What's the story

The Delhi police, on Thursday, arrested a kanwariya named Rahul alias Billa for vandalizing a car in Moti Nagar, earlier this week. They damaged a car driven by a 25-year-old woman after it 'brushed' one of them. Notably, Billa has spent six-seven months in jail for a theft case in 2014. He is a drug addict too. The hooliganism of kanwariyas has sparked nationwide outrage.

The criminal

Uneducated and unemployed, Billa had a drug abuse problem too

DCP (West) Vijay Kumar said that Billa is unemployed and was uneducated. He reportedly had a drug abuse problem too. The police went to his house in Uttam Nagar, where his brother-in-law said Billa was in the neighborhood. The police searched for him in the locality and nabbed him. Apparently, he hadn't seen the news and was unaware that police were looking for him.

Further, the DCP said Billa didn't even know a kanwariya was 'hit'. He was travelling alone and was on his way back home after collecting water from Ganga in Haridwar. "He was using a stick and CCTV footage showed him actively involved in the destruction," the DCP added. Previously, Billa was sent to prison for stealing jewelry and cash from a Uttam Nagar house.

Billa has been charged for rioting, which is a non-bailable offense. The incident sparked outrage after it was recorded on CCTV, and people around also filmed it. Onlookers said the kanwariyas unleashed horror on people inside the car, and they were seen running for their lives. They were armed with hockey sticks, large stones and damaged the car.

Earlier, the police said the victims were hesitant to lodge a complaint. However, a case was registered later. The police are yet to recover the weapon of offense. The CCTV footage helped officials to identify three goons. They added Billa gave information about others, and they will arrest them soon. Madhup Tiwari, joint commissioner of police (western range), urged people to share information too.
