What's the story

A panel appointed by the Urban Development Ministry recommended that minimum fares for the Delhi Metro be hiked to Rs. 10 and the maximum fare be hiked to Rs. 50. According to sources, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation board will have to accept the panel's recommendation "as per law." The decision was delayed due to the MCD elections.

Delay

Recommendations made last year, delayed

The DMRC board took up the matter for consideration in November 2016. However, at the time neither the Centre nor the Delhi government were in favour of raising fares in the metro. This was due to political considerations in the run-up to the MCD elections. Representatives from the Delhi government also said they needed time to study the fare structures.
