Delhi sessions court to decide 16-year-old acid attack case on Dec 24

India

After 16 years, a Delhi Sessions Court is finally set to deliver its verdict in the acid attack case of Shaheen Malik.
On 19 November 2009, Malik was attacked with acid outside her Panipat office—allegedly by her boss, his wife, and a minor cousin, who, according to the charge sheet, were involved in planning the attack and allegedly paid a student to throw the acid on her.

Years of struggle for justice and court delays

The attack left Malik with life-changing injuries—she lost her sight for over two years and has gone through 25 reconstructive surgeries. Despite this, she kept pushing for justice.
The case faced major delays: police once marked it "untraced," it was reopened only after Malik's complaint, then transferred to Delhi due to threats against her.
Charges were dropped in 2016 but restored by the Supreme Court in 2018.
Just last week, top judges called the trial's delay "this is such a shame" and ordered all pending acid attack cases across India to be reported, insisting this trial wrap up by December 31.
