Mother sells Delhi teen to Manali-pimp for Rs. 40,000 monthly
In a disturbing incident, a teenager from Delhi has alleged that her mother sold her to a pimp for Rs. 40,000 a month. The pimp took her to Manali and forced her into sex trade. Her ordeal came to light when during an appointment with a client, she managed to escape. According to her, there are many other girls caught in Manali's sex market.
The 16-year-old was sold to the pimp a month ago, she says. On Saturday, she ran away and reached a hospital, who contacted child services, who informed police. "We've arrested the main accused from Manali, who is a resident of Zirakpur, Punjab," Kullu SP Shalini Agnihotri said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, POCSO and Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act.
Agnihotri says the police suspect the racket is connected to Delhi. "Our team is seriously investigating the matter," she said. Meanwhile, the accused who has been arrested was produced in court yesterday; he has been remanded to police custody for three days.
Prime tourist destinations like Manali often tend to be a lucrative market for sex workers. In recent years, police claim to have busted nine rackets, some of them involving foreigners too. In the latest incident, the rescued victim alleges the conspirators have many juveniles in their trap. The other girls have gone underground, police say, but assured they will reach all of them.
