A 31-year-old woman from Delhi was forced to spend a night in a forest in Uttarakhand after allegedly escaping an attempted rape by her taxi driver. The incident occurred on Thursday when the woman hired a taxi for Nainital from Kathgodam. Around 1:30am, the driver took her on a deserted road in Patwa Dangar near Nainital.

Woman ran into nearby woods to escape
When the woman objected to him diverting to the deserted road, the driver stopped the vehicle and began abusing and assaulting her, the police were quoted as saying by NDTV. The accused driver allegedly also snatched her mobile phone and attempted to rape her. To escape from him, she ran into nearby woods and hid there overnight. On Friday morning, she reached Patwa Dangar village with the help of locals and filed a police complaint.

Police tracked down accused driver using CCTV footage
The police immediately launched an investigation after receiving the woman's complaint. They collected evidence and sent her for a medical examination. Using CCTV footage, the taxi's registration number, and GPS data, they tracked down the accused driver as Deepak Singh Bora (39) from Pines Bhawali Road. His vehicle was seized, and the stolen mobile phone was recovered from him.

A case was registered against Bora under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape, robbery, and abduction. Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police Manjunath TC emphasized tourist safety as a top priority in Nainital. He warned taxi owners to verify drivers' credentials and documentation before handing over vehicles. Non-compliance with these orders will result in strict action against them.
