Doctors in Maharashtra strike after homeopaths given allopathic prescribing rights
Doctors across Maharashtra started an indefinite strike on August 5, 2026, after the government allowed homeopaths with a one-year pharmacology course (CCMP) to register with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) and prescribe specified allopathic medicines.
Led by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), at least 2,000 doctors are now only handling emergencies, saying this move puts patient safety at risk and undermines years of medical training.
Bombay High Court orders doctors back
The first CCMP-qualified homeopath was registered on August 3, 2026, triggering the controversy on August 4. The backlash began on August 5, 2026.
A special committee was set up to define what these practitioners can do, but many doctors feel this shortcut is not fair or safe.
MARD and the Indian Medical Association want all new registrations paused until the courts weigh in.
The Bombay High Court has now ordered doctors back to work while promising their concerns will be heard.
