Gender Gap Index: India slips to 131st position

India's gender equality score nudged up to 64.4% this year, but the country still slipped three spots to 131 out of 148 on the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index. Basically, other countries are closing the gap faster.

TL;DR

Some gains in women's economic participation

There's some good news: women's economic participation saw a small boost, with income parity ticking up and educational attainment reaching 97.1%. Health indicators for women also improved a bit. But female labor-force participation stayed stuck at 45.9%, so progress is slow.

India lags behind Bangladesh, Nepal in female political representation

The not-so-great part? Women's political representation actually dropped—fewer female MPs and ministers than last year—putting India behind neighbors like Bangladesh and Nepal on this front. So while there are some gains, big gaps remain, especially where leadership is concerned.
