Government relaunches 'Bharat Rice' with weekly online stock reporting
India
Rice prices are climbing, so the government is relaunching the "Bharat Rice" initiative.
Now, traders, wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers, and processors/millers across all states have to report their rice and paddy stocks online every Friday.
This move comes as five southern states, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, have been permitted to impose stock limits on rice and paddy wherever necessary to keep things fair.
Government doubles rice target to 50L
The goal is simple: stop hoarding and keep rice affordable for everyone.
With retail rice inflation hitting 8.25% in September 2026 (thanks to patchy rainfall and less paddy being planted), the government has doubled its rice sale target for 2026-27, aiming for 50 lakh tons through public sales.
