Woman 'haunted by spirits' kills her children in suicide attempt

In a bizarre and tragic incident, a woman in Gujarat ended up killing four out of her five children in a failed suicide attempt. The incident took place at the Panch Pipla village in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, when the woman jumped into a well with all five children. After she was rescued, she claimed that she had been haunted by spirits. Here's more.

She threw her children into a well before jumping in

According to the police, the woman, Geeta Bhaliya, left her home in Royal village along with her children on the pretext of going to a temple in one of the nearby villages. Instead, she went to a farm in the Panch Pipla village where she had worked with her husband a few years ago. Then, she threw her children in, before jumping in herself.

Villagers managed to rescue Geeta and her eldest daughter

The inhabitants of the Panch Pipla village somehow came to know what was going on, and rushed in to help the woman and her children. They managed to rescue Geeta, along with her eldest daughter, 10-year-old Dharmistha. However, the other children were not so lucky, and their bodies were later fished out by the fire brigade.

The children were aged between 1.5 to 8 years

"We have recovered the bodies of four siblings, including two brothers and two sisters, aged between one and a half year and eight years from a well," said a police official after the bodies of the deceased children were fished out.

Geeta says evil spirits haunted her

When questioned, Geeta told police that evil spirits haunted her the moment she closed her eyes. Further, Geeta's family was facing severe financial troubles for the past two years. She claimed she couldn't eat properly because of financial woes, and couldn't sleep properly because of the spirits. She wanted to end her life, but was worried about her children, so she took them along.
