Gujarat government amends Factories Act

Gujarat just updated its factory rules: workers can now do up to 12-hour shifts (still capped at 48 hours a week), and for the first time, women are officially allowed to work night shifts (7 pm-6 am).
But it's not a free-for-all—women have to give written consent, and factories must provide safety steps like CCTV, good lighting, and female security staff.

TL;DR

What's the big picture?

This move opens up more job options for women while aiming to keep them safe at work.
It also gives factories more flexibility to meet production needs and attract investment.
Plus, with higher overtime pay and required consent for extra hours or night shifts, worker rights get some extra protection.
Overall, it's a sign that Gujarat is trying to be both business-friendly and more inclusive in the workplace.
