Heatwave warning for North India, heavy rainfall predicted in South
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a heatwave warning for North India, with Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana expected to be particularly affected. In contrast, South India is predicted to experience heavy rainfall until May 22. The southern peninsular region is preparing for widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next seven days.
Southern regions brace for widespread rainfall
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Lakshadweep and South Karnataka are set to experience widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next week. Rainfall activity is also likely over the weekend. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana and Rayalaseema are also expected to see light to moderate rainfall during this period, the weather department predicted.
Extreme rainfall expected in specific regions
According to reports, certain areas within Tamil Nadu and Kerala are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall on May 16 and May 20 respectively. Isolated light rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is predicted over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Gujarat on May 16. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to see scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over the next seven days.
Rainfall and thunderstorms predicted for northeastern states
The northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to receive widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next seven days. Sikkim and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya might experience isolated heavy rainfall. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to bring isolated light rainfall to the Western Himalayan region from May 17 to 19.
Severe heatwave conditions expected in North India
While South India braces for heavy rainfall, several other parts of the country are set to experience scorching heat. The IMD has warned of severe heatwave conditions in some parts of West Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi from May 17 to 20. Isolated pockets of these regions along with East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and North Madhya Pradesh are also likely to face heatwave conditions from May 16 to 20.
