Himachal: 12-year-old Dalit boy dies by suicide after caste-based harassment
A 12-year-old Dalit boy in Shimla's Rohru area died by suicide on September 16, 2025, after allegedly facing caste-based harassment and confinement from upper-caste women.
The women accused him of "defiling" their home when he entered their house while playing, demanded a goat as punishment, and reportedly locked him in a cowshed.
He was later found unconscious and passed away at Indira Gandhi Medical College.
Women accused are out on anticipatory bail
Police have registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant IPC sections for wrongful confinement and abetment to suicide.
The accused women are out on anticipatory bail.
Community groups, including the Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM), have condemned the incident and are calling for strict action, warning of protests if justice isn't served.
