Himachal Pradesh approves regulated hemp cultivation for industrial use
Himachal Pradesh just gave the green light to regulated hemp cultivation for industrial use.
Announced by Kullu MLA Sunder Singh Thakur on September 11, 2026, this move is all about creating jobs and giving the state's economy a lift.
Hemp grown here will be used in everything from eco-friendly building materials to textiles and packaging.
Only low-THC hemp under 0.3% allowed
Farmers can start general hemp cultivation for ₹500 per bigha, while medicinal cultivation costs ₹1 lakh per bigha.
Only low-THC (less than 0.3%) varieties are allowed, with seeds provided by Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University.
The government expects to generate ₹2,000 crore in revenue and offer a sustainable option for farmers hit by wildlife crop losses.
