    What's the story

In an important judgment, the Supreme Court, on September 26, struck down some provisions relating to authentication of the Aadhaar programme, and the Section 57 of Aadhaar Act.

This disarms entities like banks, telecom operators, e-wallet services providers from asking you to link your Aadhaar with them.

Here's more on this, and how you can go about de-linking your Aadhaar from your bank accounts and e-wallets.

    Details

Here's what the Supreme court order means for you

The aforesaid Section of the Aadhaar Act was used to exploit individual's biometric and demographic information by private entities.

This part of the provision was in a way threat to one's Right To Privacy, thus has been scrapped.

Now, private entities no longer have the right to demand users' Aadhaar details, and you can de-link your Aadhaar from such services, if already linked.

    De-linking

How to de-link your Aadhaar from bank and e-wallet services

First off, go to your bank's netbanking website, then in the profile/personal details section, select the option to 'de-link Aadhaar.' After selecting the option, you will receive an SMS confirmation about the same.

In case you don't have a netbanking account or there's no 'de-linking' option on your bank's website, you may write a letter or e-mail to your bank/e-wallet service provider for de-linking.
