Hyderabad groundwater falls over 1 meter between September and October
India
Groundwater levels in Hyderabad and nearby areas have dropped by more than 1 meter just between September and October 2026, according to the Telangana Ground Water Department.
The average level went from 11.58 meters to 12.59 meters below ground, affecting key city zones like Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri.
Officials warn after Hyderabad monsoon shortfall
This drop lines up with a major rainfall shortfall: Hyderabad got only 484mm of rain instead of the usual 729mm this monsoon.
Some places are hit harder: Kukatpally now has the deepest groundwater at 22.88 meters below ground, while Shaikpet is much shallower at 2.35 meters.
With almost 12% of city areas now crossing critical groundwater limits, officials say it's time for serious water-saving efforts before things get worse.
