IISc scientist duped of ₹8.8 lakh by fake CBI officer
A 49-year-old Indian Institute of Science (IISc) scientist lost ₹8.8 lakh after a scammer, pretending to be a CBI officer, claimed she was involved in 17 criminal cases.
The fraudster showed her fake documents of arrest warrant and claimed the CBI had obtained Supreme Court permission to arrest her, pressuring her into transferring money online between September 17 and 19.
Cybercrime cops are investigating the case
The scammer called the scientist on her phone, threatened her with bogus legal documents, and warned she'd be arrested if she didn't pay up.
She ended up sending a total of ₹8.8 lakh before confiding in her family, who encouraged her to report it to the police.
Now, cybercrime officers are investigating and remind everyone: never trust calls demanding money from supposed officials—always double-check before taking action.
