CBSE Class-X English exam: Extra-marks to students for incorrect question
If reports are to be believed, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is going to award two extra marks to those students who have attempted an incorrect question in Class 10 English board exam on 12 March 2018. CBSE reportedly agreed to give the extra marks for a wrong question in the comprehension passage section that asked students to find synonyms. Here's more.
What exactly was the question?
The third question of Comprehension Passage 2 in the English paper asked students to find and write the synonyms of "endurance, obstruction, and motivation" in the second, fourth, and fifth paragraphs, respectively, of the given passage. However, students were confused and teachers, too, noted that synonyms of the given words weren't in the specified paragraphs but the third and sixth paragraphs of the passage.
Error was there; it may have confused students: Teachers
A teacher said: "Students tend to look for the meanings in the paras specified. However, even if a student was able to search (for synonyms)...in different paragraphs, he/she would have been confused regarding the same, trying to find some other synonym which was not there!"
English paper was fairly easy barring the wrong question
Many teachers said the question was "clearly erroneous", adding they've sent their feedback to CBSE in the prescribed format. After receiving the feedback, CBSE reportedly decided to rectify this error. Meanwhile, an online petition was reportedly launched in this regard. Apart from this two-mark question, the English paper was quite easy. Some teachers felt the literature section could've been a little tricky for students.
Reports doing rounds on Delhi-NCR school groups on WhatsApp
Shortly after the English board exam, several WhatsApp "expert" groups started discussing the incorrect question in the comprehension passage section. Reports on "reliable" WhatsApp groups suggest that CBSE would award two extra marks to only those students who attempted the question. It's essential to understand that CBSE hasn't officially declared anything and the authenticity of these reports couldn't be confirmed yet.
