India discussing Russia-Ukraine peace with partners, no formal proposal yet
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday that India is currently in talks with its partners regarding the Russia-Ukraine crisis, but no formal proposal has been made yet. The statement comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, where he will attend the Quad meeting and hold bilateral discussions with world leaders, including US President Joe Biden. PM Modi's visit follows his recent trips to Ukraine and Russia amidst ongoing tensions.
India's role in Russia-Ukraine peace talks
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the nature of any proposal from India would depend on the consensus achieved through these discussions. He said, "As you know, the Prime Minister recently visited Russia and Ukraine, and after those visits, he also held discussions with leaders, including President Biden and President Putin." "So, I can only say at this point that these talks are ongoing between the leaders," Misri added.
PM Modi's agenda at Quad meeting
The Quad meeting will take place in Delaware, US President Biden's hometown. In addition to the summit, PM Modi is scheduled for standalone bilateral meetings with representatives from the US, Japan, and Australia. The MEA has also indicated that several other meetings with world leaders are being planned. During his visit, agreements on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and India-US Drug Framework are expected to be exchanged.
