India keeps power on with 148Mt coal covering 62 days

India managed to keep the lights on in July 2026 by maintaining a steady coal supply for its power plants, even with the tricky monsoon season.
By August 4, there were 148 million tons of coal available, adequate to meet about 62 days of the power sector's coal consumption requirement.
Most of this was stored at mine sites and in transit, with a good chunk right at the thermal power plants.

Coal output grew by 7.51% compared with last July, hitting 69.75 million tons.
Deliveries to thermal power plants jumped even more, up 13.41%, while overall dispatches increased by a strong 18%.
The Coal Ministry credited these gains to ongoing efforts for reliable supply, saying they are committed to keeping energy secure no matter the season.
