India plans 6 new strategic petroleum reserves
India is set to build six new Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) to strengthen its emergency oil stockpile.
The goal? To handle global uncertainties better and stretch the country's backup supply from 77 days of net imports to a more comfortable 90 days.
New SPRs to come up in Mangalore, Bikaner
The new SPRs will pop up in spots like Mangalore SEZ (Karnataka) and Bikaner (Rajasthan), with other locations near ports and refineries still being scouted.
Engineers India Ltd is working on detailed plans, expected by the end of the year.
Why expanding storage is crucial for India
India relies on imports for about 85% of its oil—so any global hiccup can hit hard, especially if major routes like the Strait of Hormuz are blocked.
