India wants to help rebuild Syria—here's what's up

India

India just offered to help rebuild Syria, a country still struggling after over a decade of war.
Prime Minister Modi made the proposal during his meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II on December 16, where King Abdullah highlighted Syria's reconstruction needs and Modi suggested India-Jordan collaboration.
This move follows India reaching out to Syria's new leadership in July this year and comes as India is building closer ties in West Asia.

Why does it matter?

Syria needs around $216 billion to fix homes, roads, and basic infrastructure—way more than what international aid has covered so far.
With its economy shrinking from $67.5 billion in 2011 to just $21.4 billion in 2025, the country faces huge gaps in funding for essentials like housing and energy.
By stepping in, India isn't just offering support—it's also strengthening its connections across a rapidly changing region that matters for trade and diplomacy.
