Indian Army hits 97% self-reliance in high-altitude gear

India

The Indian Army just reached a big milestone—97% of its special clothing and mountaineering gear for extreme altitudes is now made in India.
Out of 57 essential items, 55 are fully indigenized, with the last two expected to pass trials by 2026.
This shift means less reliance on imports and a stronger, more resilient supply chain for soldiers braving tough conditions.

Why does this matter?

This isn't just about uniforms—it's about innovation and national pride.
In January 2025, the Army rolled out a new three-layered combat uniform designed by NIFT Delhi, built for warmth, camouflage, and comfort.
Plus, the design is now officially protected under intellectual property laws as of October 2025.
It all adds up to India taking charge of its defense needs and making sure soldiers have top-notch gear made at home.
