Indian government to integrate AI into e-MARG for rural roads
India
The Indian government is planning to integrate AI into its e-MARG platform to make rural road maintenance smarter and faster.
Announced by Rural Development Secretary Rohit Kansal, this upgrade is part of PMGSY, which has already delivered 800,000km of rural roads across India.
AI rates roads from dashcam videos
Instead of just snapping photos, officials will now use GPS dashcams for video inspections.
AI will scan these videos and rate road quality as "good," "fair," or "poor," working alongside human checks for accuracy.
With tools like automated defect detection and digital mapping (and a boosted ₹19,000-crore budget), this tech push aims to cut costs, make roads last longer, and help more people in villages access markets, schools, and health care.
