India's $3 billion Russian submarine deal: What's up?
India just locked in a deal valued at between $2 billion and $3 billion, according to different reports, to lease a Russian nuclear submarine, INS Chakra III, for 10 years.
Even though the agreement was finalized in late 2025, the sub is expected by end of 2027 or possibly later due to project complexity—because it needs major upgrades and an Indian tech makeover before it hits the water.
Why does this matter?
This sub is filling a big gap for India's Navy. Since losing its last leased submarine in 2021, India's been short-handed underwater.
INS Chakra III will keep things running while homegrown Arihant-class subs are still being built.
Plus, it'll help train crews and boost India's nuclear defense skills at sea.
The bigger picture
This isn't just about hardware—it shows how India is balancing old-school ties with Russia while also working with Western partners.
With President Putin visiting on December 4 and regional tensions rising, this move signals that India is serious about staying secure in tricky waters near China and Pakistan.
