IndiGo flight rerouted after rare Ethiopian volcano eruption

India

On Monday, an IndiGo flight from Kannur to Abu Dhabi had to make a surprise stop in Ahmedabad because of volcanic ash in the air.
The cause? Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted for the first time in nearly 10,000 years, shooting ash between 10km and 15km high and making flying risky.

How airlines handled it

Everyone on board landed safely, and IndiGo arranged return plans for passengers.
Indian aviation teams are now tracking the drifting ash near Delhi and Jaipur, tweaking flight routes as needed to keep things safe.
Akasa Air is also watching the situation closely and following global safety rules.

Why this matters

A volcano that's been quiet for millennia suddenly erupting isn't something you see every day—plus, it shows how nature can still disrupt travel plans in a big way.
For anyone flying or just curious about how airlines handle surprises, this is one to watch.
