Jayant Sinha warns of 50degC Delhi summers

India

Former Union Minister Jayant Sinha has raised the alarm: if India doesn't act fast to reduce carbon emissions, Delhi could see extreme temperatures of around 50°C in the future.
Speaking at the Transition Accelerator event, he pointed out that vehicle pollution is driving up the city's air quality index.
Even after Diwali, nights are so warm that people still need their ACs running.

Moment of reckoning

Sinha called this a "moment of reckoning" for India—reminding everyone that hitting net-zero emissions by 2070 isn't just a goal, it's essential for our future.
He urged an immediate move toward clean energy and electric vehicles as Delhi faces more brutal heatwaves and worsening air quality.
His message: tackling climate change is urgent if we want healthier cities and safer lives.

Team effort needed to tackle climate change

Sinha also stressed that fighting climate change isn't just up to leaders—it takes teamwork from policymakers, businesses, and everyday citizens.
He emphasized the need for action on all fronts, from reducing emissions from vehicles and industries to promoting renewable energy.
