Karnataka wants to curb pigeon feeding—here's why

India

Karnataka is looking to crack down on feeding pigeons in public, after health experts raised alarms about the risks from their droppings and feathers.
The Health Department has asked city officials to step in, since long-term exposure can actually scar lungs and cause lasting damage—a particular concern for vulnerable groups in densely populated areas.

What's changing?

The plan is to ban pigeon feeding where it's a nuisance, only allow it at certain spots and times, and have NGOs or charities keep those areas clean.
There'll also be campaigns to spread the word about health risks—and share safer ways for animal lovers to help birds.

How will this work?

Local officers will soon be able to hand out warnings or fines if you break these rules, backed by new and existing laws.
Karnataka is taking cues from Mumbai, where similar steps have already been put in place.
