Kerala elephant calf Maya airlifted to Vantara for urgent treatment
India
Maya, an 18-month-old orphaned elephant calf from Kerala, has been airlifted to Anant Ambani's Vantara facility in Jamnagar for urgent medical care.
After a serious fall in July 2026, experts later found that she had multiple fractures and a chest infection, and decided this move was her best shot at recovery, and a way to avoid putting her down.
Kerala wildlife official approved elephant transfer
The transfer was greenlit by Kerala's top wildlife official after Vantara specialists spotted a treatable disorder.
Maya made the journey with her caretaker and veterinarian by her side for comfort.
Now, a special committee from Kerala will keep tabs on her progress at Vantara, where she'll get advanced treatment until she's well enough to head back home.
