Kolkata woman loses ₹78L in parcel scam; 3 arrested

India

A Kolkata woman, Deepanwita Dhar, lost ₹78.3 lakh after falling for a clever parcel scam.
It all started when she got an automated message about a canceled package in her name. Thinking it was legit, she called the "customer care" number and ended up speaking to scammers pretending to be Mumbai Police officers.

How the scam worked—and what happened next

The fraudsters claimed her parcel contained drugs and that her Aadhaar info was at risk, pressuring her to transfer money as "security" to clear her name—supposedly on RBI's orders.
Once Dhar realized she'd been tricked, she went to the police.
The Cyber Crime Wing traced the money trail all the way to Gujarat and arrested three suspects.
Cops are now working to find others involved in this wider scam network.
