La Nina to cause coldest winter in North India

India

Heads up: North India is in for a seriously chilly winter.
The World Meteorological Organization says weak La Nina conditions will stick around through the first quarter of 2026, lining up with "Chillai Kalan"—the region's harshest winter stretch from late December to the end of January.
Experts expect January 2025 to be one of the coldest in years, with Delhi-NCR temps dropping 2-3°C below normal.

Why does this matter?

This rare combo of La Nina and Chillai Kalan means more intense cold waves, heavier snowfall in the Himalayas, and long stretches of dense fog—even reaching as far south as Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Daily life could get tricky: think traffic jams, tough commutes thanks to low visibility, and higher heating needs.
