Ladakh channels glacier runoff to irrigate farms and reduce waste
Ladakh is making smart use of its glacier runoff by channeling millions of liters of water each day to help local farms and fight water shortages.
Thanks to these efforts, the amount of wasted water flowing into the Indus River has dropped from 90 million liters to just 5 million liters daily, giving a real boost to villages in this dry region.
LG Saxena confirms 20 million liters diversion
After Chuchot villagers spoke up, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said the administration had diverted nearly 20 million liters of Stok Glacier water to their empty canal.
Earlier moves also redirected 90 million liters from Stok Nallah to the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, increasing its flow and making more land farmable.
The project even caught MP Shashi Tharoor's eye: he called Ladakh "Ladakh promises to be a national showcase for environmental progress and sustainability."
