Ladakh violence: Magisterial probe ordered into deaths during protests
After protests in Leh on September 24, 2025, turned violent and led to four deaths, the Ladakh administration has set up a magisterial inquiry.
The unrest broke out during a hunger strike by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), who were pushing for talks about Statehood and granting Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.
Protesters reportedly set fire to the BJP office and damaged local council property.
Investigation to be led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mukul Beniwal will head the investigation, following public calls for accountability over police actions during the protests.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on hunger strike since September 10, was arrested under the National Security Act on September 27.
A curfew that was put in place right after the violence has now been relaxed as officials look to bring clarity and answers to what happened.
