The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the country's premier engineering institutes that are recognized as centers of academic excellence in science and technology. IIT-Roorkee is one of the most sought-after of these institutes and is among the top-ranked IITs. It has also produced many successful alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields. Here are five famous IIT-Roorkee alumni to know about.
Jaiprakash Gaur, a noted Indian entrepreneur and the founder of Jaypee Group, is one of the most famous and successful alumni of IIT-Roorkee. He graduated in civil engineering from the University of Roorkee (now IIT-Roorkee) in 1950. In 1979, he founded Jaypee Group, a diversified infrastructure conglomerate in the country engaged in engineering, construction, cement, power, real estate, and hospitality among other fields.
Pradip Baija, a retired IAS officer, is another famous alumnus of IIT-Roorkee. He pursued Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in mechanical engineering from the University of Roorkee (now renamed IIT-Roorkee). He is an IAS officer of the 1966-batch from the Madhya Pradesh cadre who retired as the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur, the founders of the country's leading payment solutions provider, are also alumni of IIT-Roorkee. They founded the Bengaluru-based payments company in 2014. Razorpay offers easy payment solutions to online merchants. Mathur, the CEO of Razorpay, pursued BTech in Mechanical Engineering (2009-13) from IIT-Roorkee, while Kumar studied BTech in Computer Science (2008-12) from the prestigious institute.
Mohit Saxena, the co-founder of InMobi, is another famous and successful alumnus of IIT-Roorkee. He pursued BE in Material Science (1993-97) from the institute. He co-founded InMobi in 2007; it is a global provider of enterprise platforms for marketers, with Abhay Singhal, Amit Gupta, and Naveen Tewari. Notably, InMobi is one of India's first unicorns.
Amit Aggarwal, the co-founder of travel portal and online travel company Via.com, is also an IIT-Roorkee graduate. He pursued BTech in Computer Science & Engineering from IIT-Roorkee. He founded Via.com, which was acquired by EbixCash in 2017, along with Vinay Gupta in 2006.
