Madras HC sets up SIT to probe TVK rally stampede
The Madras High Court has strongly criticized Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its leader Vijay for a tragic stampede at their rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, where 41 people—mostly women and children—lost their lives.
Calling it a "huge man-made disaster," the court set up a special investigation team led by IPS officer Asra Garg to look into what went wrong.
HC asks state to pause political rallies on highways
The court criticized TVK leaders for not being present during the chaos and questioned why police made only two arrests.
It also pointed out that basic facilities and preventive steps were missing, despite knowing a big turnout was expected.
The judge asked the state to pause political rallies on highways until proper safety steps are in place, stressing that better rules are needed to keep people safe at public events.
