Man who filmed Bengaluru saree theft attack instead of helping arrested

India

On September 21, a 55-year-old woman was violently attacked on Avenue Road, Bengaluru, after being accused of stealing sarees worth ₹91,500.
Umed Ram and his employee Mahendra Seervi dragged her outside, kicked her repeatedly—including in private areas—and verbally abused her.
The incident was caught on camera by Ankit Jain, a nearby shop owner, but instead of alerting police, he just shared the video with his contacts.
Now he's been booked under Section 239 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for not reporting the crime.

Police under fire for slow response, inadequate action

Police are facing heat for their slow and inadequate response—despite a patrol car being at the scene, officers didn't step in.
The woman was initially detained based only on Ram's complaint; it took days (and the viral video) before police registered a case against the assaulters.
Local traders have called out authorities for acting without proper investigation or hearing the woman's side first.
