MCD's ₹523cr plan to tackle dust pollution ahead of winter
Delhi's air is about to get some much-needed attention.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) just announced a ₹523 crore plan to tackle dust pollution, especially with winter (and smog season) coming up.
The focus? Cleaning up road dust, construction debris, and dumping sites—basically the biggest culprits behind that hazy sky.
Mechanical sweepers will be the main focus
The MCD wants to buy 60 mechanical road sweepers and keep them running for the next 10 years—most of the budget is for this upgrade.
They're also planning better barricades, sprinklers, CCTV cameras, and air quality sensors at C&D waste sites.
Right now, only bigger roads get swept because traffic and parked cars make it tough on narrower streets.
Plus, there are already 140 water sprinklers in action across the city (with plans to retrofit more tankers soon), and special teams will be on winter duty stopping illegal dumping or open burning.
Sanitation teams will conduct surprise checks
A proposal for battery-powered vacuum litter pickers didn't get approved this time.
But regular surprise checks by sanitation teams continue in all city zones—so expect stricter waste rules ahead.
