What's the story

A curfew has been imposed in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district till 6:00am on Sunday. The decision was taken after violent protests erupted earlier this week over the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, according to a report by PTI. The unrest has left two dead and led to incidents of vandalism and arson in areas such as Chibinang and Tura.

Curfew relaxation

Residents can procure essential items during relaxation hours

District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal has issued an order for the curfew to be enforced across West Garo Hills. However, residents can procure essential items on Saturday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. In East Garo Hills district, the curfew continues indefinitely, with Williamnagar Main Bazar allowed to open from 6:00am to 1:00pm. Residents in both districts are advised to stay indoors except during relaxation hours.

Election delay

GHADC elections postponed

In light of the deteriorating law and order situation, the Meghalaya government has postponed the GHADC elections. The elections were originally scheduled for April 10. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to strictly enforce curfew orders and take action against violators. According to The Assam Tribune, clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal groups on March 10 during the nomination process for the GHADC elections.
