What's the story

A mother-daughter duo was caught by locals while trying to dump a body in the Ganga river at Kumartuli Ghat, Kolkata. The women, identified as Falguni Ghosh and her mother Arati Ghosh, were caught with a blue trolley bag containing the body of Sumita Ghosh, Falguni's aunt-in-law, per India Today. The incident took place around 8:00am when locals spotted their suspicious behavior near the riverbank.

False claim

Duo's initial explanation raises suspicions

Initially, the women claimed that the bag contained the remains of their pet dog. However, this explanation only fueled local suspicion. A local resident told India Today, "When we intercepted them, they claimed that they were carrying the dead body of their pet dog." "But it seemed more suspicious because they were not willing to open the bag at any cost," they said.

Investigation begins

Police intervention reveals gruesome discovery

The locals eventually alerted the police. Upon reaching, police broke open the trolley bag and found Sumita's bloodied body inside. Sumita had been living with Falguni and Arati since February 11 after separating from her husband, police sources said. Sumita was the sister of Falguni's father-in-law. A senior Kolkata Police official said Sumita was killed during a heated altercation with Falguni on Monday evening.

Deadly dispute

Altercation leads to fatal consequences

The altercation reportedly escalated when Falguni pushed Sumita against a wall, making her lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, another fight broke out, during which Falguni allegedly hit Sumita's face and neck with a brick, killing her. The mother-daughter duo then attempted to dispose of the body by putting it in a trolley bag and heading to the river. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and the body has been sent to Calcutta Medical College for postmortem examination.
