Mumbai: Conmen posing as cops extort ₹1cr from gas agency owner

India

A 39-year-old gas agency owner in Malad East lost almost ₹1 crore after scammers pretended to be Mumbai Police officers.
The con began when they convinced him his neighbor had been killed using his money and demanded an initial payment of ₹50,000.
Over time, the fraudsters kept raising the stakes, collecting cash through an elderly man at a local park.

Threats and aftermath

Gupta was pressured with threats of arrest and harm to his family, eventually handing over ₹80 lakh in cash and paying the rest online.
When demands wouldn't stop, he felt so overwhelmed that he considered suicide—his wife filed a missing person report before police found him safe four days later.
An FIR has been registered against four unidentified suspects; the investigation is ongoing.
