Mumbai gets heaviest September rain since 2021
Mumbai just got its heaviest September rain since 2021, with 606mm falling so far this month.
Over the weekend alone, some areas saw more than 100mm in a single day, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the city.
Colaba and Santacruz were especially drenched, clocking 101.2mm and 77.5mm respectively.
Santacruz and Colaba are well above average
This much rain isn't just a talking point—it's putting real pressure on Mumbai's infrastructure.
Since June, Santacruz has seen over 3,100mm of rain (that's nearly a meter above normal!), while Colaba is also well above average.
The IMD's orange alert indicates that showers are expected to recede gradually.
Uneven distribution of rain across the city
Not all neighborhoods are getting soaked equally: western suburbs averaged about 99mm over the weekend, while eastern areas got around 80mm and the island city saw less at about 74mm.
So depending on where you are in Mumbai, your experience with this monsoon might look pretty different!
