New safety measures for tourists in Meghalaya
After the recent murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi—allegedly by his wife and others—during a honeymoon trip in Meghalaya's Sohra region, local authorities have made it compulsory for tourists to hire registered guides for trekking and outdoor activities in East Khasi Hills.
The move comes as a direct response to rising safety concerns among visitors.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M Kurbah says the rule will be strictly enforced, with violators facing penalties and potential denial of access to trekking.
The district is boosting the number of trained guides and working with local communities to make sure everyone follows the new guidelines.
With nearly two million visitors expected this year—including for big events like the Cherry Blossom Festival—these changes are all about keeping tourists safe while exploring Meghalaya's famous spots.
