NHRC confronts AP government over public abuse case
India
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked Andhra Pradesh authorities for answers after a woman in Chittoor district was reportedly tied to a tree and beaten by a moneylender.
The incident happened because her husband, who had taken an ₹80,000 loan and borrowed from others, left the village without repaying.
The story came to light after media reports surfaced on June 17.
Woman's story and NHRC's order
While her husband disappeared, the woman stayed behind, working as a daily wage laborer to support her family and pay off debts.
Villagers stepped in to free her during the assault.
Now, the NHRC wants a detailed report within two weeks to check for human rights violations.
