No FASTag? UPI users will soon pay less at toll plazas
Starting November 15, 2025, if you don't have FASTag but pay your highway toll using UPI, your penalty drops to just 1.25 times the regular fee—down from the double charge you'd face with cash.
The government hopes this makes digital payments more appealing and keeps things moving at toll booths.
The new rule
Right now, no FASTag means paying double (₹200 on a ₹100 toll) if you use cash.
With the new rule, UPI users will pay only ₹125 for that same ₹100 toll; cash still costs double.
This shift is all about nudging people toward digital payments and cutting down on slowdowns.
FASTag now handles almost all toll transactions in India
FASTag already handles almost 98% of all toll collections in India and has slashed average waiting times at plazas to just 47 seconds as of 2022.
The new rules are set to keep this momentum going.
Other recent developments
The government rolled out a FASTag Annual Pass this year, which costs ₹3,000 annually and allows 200 trips on national highways and expressways to make highway travel even smoother for regulars.
Plus, if your valid FASTag isn't detected because of a system glitch, you can cross without paying so operators stay accountable.
