NSS opposes proposed caste-based census

India

The Nair Service Society (NSS) has urged the President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister to halt India's proposed caste-based census, saying it could break up communities and go against the Constitution. NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair warned that such a move risks dividing people by caste and religion, which could hurt national unity.

NSS likens caste census to 1931 British colonial divide

Nair brought up the 1931 British colonial census, which he says caused serious splits between communities. The NSS argues that collecting caste data now would repeat old mistakes and violate rights like equality and privacy. While some groups support the census, the NSS is ready to take legal action if needed, stressing their hope for a more equal society without caste-based labels.
