Only 38 out of 150+ Delhi clubs have fire NOCs
What's the story
The tragic nightclub fire in Goa that killed 25 people has raised major concerns over fire safety compliance in Delhi. According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), only a small percentage of the city's hotels, clubs, and banquet halls have valid fire safety No Objection Certificates (NOCs). Out of hundreds of operational hotels in Delhi, only 52 have a valid fire safety NOC.
Safety gaps
Delhi clubs and banquet halls lack fire safety compliance
The situation is similar in Delhi's club scene. Out of over 150 clubs, only 38 have valid fire clearances. This raises serious concerns for the safety of thousands who frequent these venues every weekend. The banquet hall segment also shows significant non-compliance with only 215 out of 347 identified halls having active fire safety NOCs.
Regulatory gaps
Fire safety regulations and compliance challenges in Delhi
Under existing norms, any club, restaurant, bar or hotel with a built-up area over 90 square meters must obtain a fire safety NOC. These certificates are valid for three years. Establishments under this size are exempt but must submit an affidavit confirming adherence to basic fire safety norms like extinguishers and alarms. Despite these regulations, many establishments continue operating with expired certifications or pending renewals.
Ongoing investigation
Goa nightclub fire investigation and its impact on Delhi
The Goa nightclub fire at 'Birch by Romeo Lane' in Arpora was reportedly caused by "electric firecrackers" inside the venue. The tragedy exposed alleged illegalities and lapses by government officials in enforcing safety norms. Preliminary investigations revealed that the nightclub had been operating without a valid fire department NOC. Among the 25 victims were four Delhi residents who were relatives of another victim, Bhavna, who survived the incident.
Post-fire measures
Noida intensifies inspections after Goa nightclub fire
In the wake of the Goa tragedy, Noida authorities have stepped up inspections across malls and nightlife hubs. A team from the fire department conducted surprise checks at Garden Galleria Mall, inspecting fire safety measures and compliance records. The inspection drive aims to identify gaps and ensure all venues adhere to mandatory fire safety standards.
