The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), comprising Main and Advanced exams, is the country's most difficult engineering entrance exam. While lakhs of students appear for JEE-Advanced, the gateway to prestigious IITs, only some make the cut. JEE-Advanced 2019 results were announced on June 14 and those who couldn't get a good rank must focus on other opportunities. Here are some options for such candidates.
Candidates can give the JEE another try next year
Candidates who have cleared JEE-Advanced with a low rank might think it's the end of everything. However, instead of feeling disappointed, they must think about the next step. If they want to join IITs and aren't interested in other options, they can give the JEE another try. However, they should first identify their preparation flaws/weaknesses and focus on improving their performance before appearing again.
Students can try for courses at other institutes accepting JEE-Advanced
Other than IITs, several institutes accept JEE-Advanced score; students who couldn't get into IITs can try for these institutes. These include Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy (IIPE), Visakhapatnam, and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Rae Bareli among others.
Opt for institutes that accept the JEE Main score
While many people aspire to join IITs, there are many other top-ranking engineering institutes in the country that offer quality technical education. Many of these institutes, including private ones, admit students based on JEE Main performance. The National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and other top private institutes also accept the JEE Main score.
Appear for other engineering entrances or join private institutes
Students passionate about engineering can also prepare and appear for other national-level exams like BITSAT, VITEE, SRMEEE, AEEE, etc. or state-level entrance exams. Otherwise, students who aren't interested in dropping a year can opt for reputed private universities or institutes that offer good engineering courses. While several private institutes conduct their own entrance exams, some admit candidates based on merit or through management quota.

Alternatively, students can also explore interesting options other than engineering such as science-related ones and a number of other exciting opportunities and other avenues. Those who have completed Class 12 in the PCM stream can go for undergraduate courses in science and technology, business and management, commerce, accounts and banking, law, humanities, journalism, fashion designing, hospitality, arts and languages among others.
