PM Surya Ghar drives India's rooftop solar to 14 GW
India's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojna has seriously boosted rooftop solar power: daily installations shot up from 5,000 to more than 16,300 in less than a year.
Thanks to this push, the country's total rooftop solar capacity (including government buildings) now stands at an impressive 14 GW, according to Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi.
Families earn ₹4.21 billion selling electricity
The scheme now benefits five million households, with more than 1.2 million families earning a combined ₹4.21 billion by selling extra electricity back to the grid, averaging about ₹3,500 per household each year.
With support from incentives for solar modules and tax breaks on green tech, India is closing in on its big target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, already reaching nearly 300 GW.
