    What's the story

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today approved a new policy for promotion of railway sportspersons, according to which not just those who win medals but even those who are awarded Padma Shri or have produced medal winners will be promoted as officers.

Sportspersons, who have made two appearances in Olympics or won medals in Asian Games or Common Wealth Games also deserve this promotion.

    Award winners

Award winners would also be entitled for promotion

Railway sportspersons who are winners of awards like Arjuna or Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna would be entitled to the promotion, Goyal said.

"Any coach whose trainees have produced at least three medal-winning performances in Olympic Games or World Cups or World Championships or Asian Games or Commonwealth Games, including at least one medal in Olympic Games, would be eligible for the officer-rank," he said.

    Information

Policy will act as an incentive to country's elite sportspersons

This liberalized promotion policy will act as an incentive to the country's elite sportspersons and coaches, Goyal said. In April this year, Goyal had said that the promotion policy will be revamped.
