The Indian Railways has announced 9,744 vacancies for the posts of RPF constable and RSPF Sub Inspector (SI). The Railways will accept applications for the posts from 1st June till 30th June and the exams for the same will be held in either September or October. This year, around 46% of the vacancies have been reserved for female candidates. Here are the details.

Vacancies for men and women, broken down by numbers

For the post of constable, there are 4,801 vacancies for men and 4,408 vacancies for women. For the post of Sub Inspector, there are 819 and 301 vacancies for men and women respectively.

Eligibility criteria and pay scales for the posts

To be eligible for the post of constable, candidates need to have passed SSLC/Matriculate from a recognized board, and must be between 18-25 years of age. For the post of Sub Inspector, candidates must be graduates from a recognized university, and must be between 20-25 years of age. Allowances apart, constables will get paid Rs. 21,700, while Sub Inspectors will get Rs. 35,400.

What is the selection process for the posts?

The selection process has four stages. Candidates first have to pass a computer-based test (CBT), and then pass physical efficiency (PE) and physical measurement (PM) tests. The third stage is a trade test and applies only for applicants who have opted for posts of drivers, ancillary staff, and band members. The fourth stage involves document verification.

2018 has seen one of the biggest Railways recruitment drives

2018 has seen one of the largest recruitment drives by the Indian Railways. Earlier, the Railways had advertised for 90,000 positions and had received applications from over 2.5 crore people - larger than the population of Australia. Of these, over 1 crore applications were for the post of assistant locomotive pilot. The sheer number of applications perhaps highlights the employment challenge facing PM Modi.
