Rajya Sabha approves ₹54,067cr additional spending for 2022-23 financial year
Rajya Sabha just gave the green light to an extra ₹54,067 crore in government spending for the 2022-23 financial year.
This move, already cleared by Lok Sabha, helps cover expenses that went over the original budget.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that these costs were reviewed by the Public Accounts Committee earlier this year.
Government repaid ₹53,871cr old debt
Out of the total, ₹196.44 crore was due to a court order against the Railway Ministry.
The big chunk, ₹53,871 crore, was used to pay off old government debt (not new spending).
Sitharaman said it carries no fiscal impact.
Parliament approval required, 3rd FY23 bill
By law, all government spending, even after it happens, needs Parliament's okay.
This is the third Appropriation Bill in this parliamentary session — Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026 — regularizing spending for the 2022-23 financial year, making sure everything stays official and transparent.
